Have you checked the small print on your Microsoft 365 Family subscription recently? Microsoft has just announced a significant change to their Family cloud storage plan, and it fundamentally alters how storage is allocated across households.
For years, the standard allowance has been a generous 1TB of private storage per person, supporting up to six users (a potential total of 6TB). It acted as a brilliant safety net for storing everything from extensive photo libraries to essential documents. Now, Microsoft is replacing these individual quotas with a capped 2TB shared pool for the entire household.
It is important to note that your files will remain entirely private—only you can see them unless you explicitly choose to share. However, the overall space is now shared. This means if one family member—perhaps a teenager backing up large video files or a partner with years of high-resolution photography—uses a large portion of the 2TB, the rest of the household will have to share whatever remains.
This new storage model is already active for any new or upgraded accounts as of 8 October 2026. For existing subscribers, your current storage limits will remain in place until your first subscription renewal on or after 2 May 2027, at which point you will be automatically transitioned to the shared 2TB pool.
